On June 12, 2014, “the biggest single-event sporting competition in the world” (according to FIFA) will begin: The World Cup. The World Cup brings together the world’s greatest soccer players who will proudly play for their home country’s soccer team. It will put these players’ talents and skills on display for the next month, capturing the eyes and attention of millions and millions of viewers across the world. According to CNBC, soccer players are the highest paid players in the world, beating out MLB, NBA, and NFL players. With such large amounts of disposable income, these players have the ability to purchase many luxury items, such as large homes, expensive cars, and luxury watches. Many of the world’s best soccer players are either luxury watch ambassadors or have a propensity to wear a certain watch or specific brand.
Lionel Messi, one of if not the greatest soccer players in the world, will play forward for his home country of Argentina during the world Cup. Because of his excellence and unparalleled skills, Audemars Piguet has recruited him to serve as an ambassador for the watch brand. Messi has changed the sport and Audemars Piguet felt that deserved his own watch model and created the Audemars Piguet Lionel Messi Limited Edition watch. Messi and Audemars Piguet share many similar qualities. They are innovative in their style and are leaders in their sport/industry.
Cristiano Ronaldo plays forward for Spanish club, Real Madrid, and, depending on a recent injury, will play for his home country of Portugal for the 2014 World Cup. In addition to winning this year’s UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid in May, Ronaldo had more big news as he became the most recent ambassador for TAG Heuer. Both Ronaldo and TAG Heuer push the limits, making them a great pair.
Attacking midfielder for AC Milan and Brazil, Ricardo Kaka will enjoy playing the World Cup in his home country in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Kaka is one of the top 10 highest paid soccer players, with total earnings of $19.3 million on the year and plays for AC Milan. In early April, Kaka attended the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore exhibition in Milan, Italy, and is often spotted wearing a Royal Oak watch in his everyday life.

While these players will not be wearing their watches during the World Cup matches, we can hope that they slip one their watch between games so that we may catch a glimpse during their interviews. However, one watch brand name that we will be seeing a lot of during the event is Hublot. For the second year in a row, Hublot is the official time keeper of the World Cup and has extended this partnership through 2018. In February, Hublot officially opened its boutique in Brazil, its first boutique in Latin America. As the official timekeeper of the FIFA World Cup, the “Hublot” name will be on the referee’s board when substitutions are announced, as well as stoppage time.

For the next month, the eyes of millions and millions of people around the globe will be fixated on the World Cup and its top players. There is no doubt that we will see some of the best talents and skills to ever play the game and may also get to witness games that will later be considered classics. If we are lucky, we may also spot a few luxury watches on the wrists of some of the world’s greatest players.
