In 2005, the Big Bang helped transform the Hublot brand. The model spurred from the original vision of the brand’s founder. Later, the legendary Jean-Claude Biver brought the Big Bang to fruition. Ultimately, the model was crucial in establishing the Hublot brand, as we know it today.
The Birth of the Big Bang Unico Sapphire
Over the years, the Big Bang collection has continued to evolve in a way unlike most other watches. A prime example came in 2016 with the debut of the Big Bang Unico Sapphire. Biver may very well have foreshadowed this concept with the early “phantom” versions of the Big Bang. Instead of an all-white model, Hublot has opted to contrast the all-black iteration with an totally clear one. The brand achieved this unique look with a three-part case, bezel, and caseback comprised entirely of sapphire crystal. This marks an industry-first for production of a large-scale series of watches with cases cut from sapphire blocks. In addition, they created the skeletonized dial with transparent resin. The monochromatic, clear color scheme extends to transparent elements on the dial, like the hands, and even the original strap. The result is a truly one-of-a-kind variation on the iconic Big bang that boldly showcases each and every working part.
Under the Hood of the Big Bang Unico Sapphire
The appearance of the Big Bang Unico Sapphire is undeniable eye catching – perhaps even a bit mesmerizing. However, the real beauty of this model is under the hood, even if that hood happens to be transparent. The 45mm automatic flyback chronograph houses the brand’s own Unico HUB1242 movement. It operates at 4Hz and contains 28 jewels. The model also boasts a 72-hour power reserve, 100 meters of water resistance, and a column wheel transmission. Of course, you can see all of this in its glory through the dial. In addition to the transparent construction, the brand incorporates titanium and silicon elements. Together, they create an incredibly lightweight and surprisingly wearable timepiece.
The Big Bang Unico Sapphire: More than a Novel Design
With the Big Bang Unico Sapphire, there’s certainly a bit of wow-factor at play. Even as a limited edition of just 500 pieces, it’s the first large scale, serial produced model to showcase this type of sapphire construction. Despite the splendor of the model, it’s actually quite versatile. The transparent design allows the model to perfectly pair with any strap. The Big Bang Unico Sapphire is completely malleable to your individual style or desire change up the look. In our inventory, we fitted it with a brand-new aftermarket rubber strap featuring a genuine Hublot buckle. The contrasting black really helps make the silver inner workings pop against the clear construction for an overall striking look.
