Steph Curry – Basketball Legacy and Role Model

Basketball runs through Stephen Curry’s blood. His father, Dell Curry, played in the NBA, and he followed in his footsteps. The Golden State Warriors drafted Steph Curry in 2009 after two years of impressive college play at Davidson. He’s been loyal to the team ever since, and it’s paid off. He led his team to a championship victory in 2015. The next year, he became the first player in NBA history to receive MVP by unanimous vote. Then, he helped the Warriors secure the NBA title again in both 2017 and 2018.

Watches are certainly no stranger to the world of basketball. At most games, you can spot an Audemars Piguet, Hublot, or maybe even a Patek Philippe on the sidelines. Whether on the wrists of players, coaches, or celebrities sitting court-side, athletes and fans tend to enjoy a fine timepiece. Steph Curry is no different. He’s a watch enthusiast with a pretty impressive collection, but it doesn’t include the typical models you’d expect. His taste is mature and steadfast, much like the way he’s approached his life and career.

Rising to the Elite of the NBA

Though he was born in Akron, he grew up in Charlotte. Curry got his foundation in basketball by practicing with his father throughout his youth.  However, his mother nurtured his discipline to train into his teen years. Then, it came time to start college and begin to establish his career. He played for Davidson and even earned a Breakthrough Player of the Year ESPY his sophomore year.  Once the NBA drafted him during his junior year, he started his professional career with a bang. Curry finished second in the Rookie of the Year balloting. He also landed a position on the USA Men’s Basketball Senior National Team. They took home the gold at the World Championships that year. Just two years into his burgeoning career, he married his college sweetheart.

An ankle injury set him back for the next couple of seasons. However, once again, he returned stronger than ever in 2015. That year, the Warriors won their first championship since 1975. The next three years were peak seasons for Curry, with the Warriors taking home titles again in 2017 and 2018. Unfortunately, a MCL injury has thwarted his momentum in the 2018/2019 season, leaving him benched for the first several games.

It was while he was cheering his team on court-side that Steph Curry sported the latest addition to his watch collection. During a November game against the Dallas Mavericks, he wore the brand new rose gold Santos de Cartier Skeleton, first revealed at the SIHH in 2018. The model is an incredibly unique interpretation of the brand’s iconic Santos. It’s part of a new collection featuring manually wound, in-house movements. The brand specially designed each movement so the bridge forms Cartier’s trademark Roman numeral shapes.

Aside from this distinctive Cartier, Curry is largely a Rolex man. Models like the Deepsea Diver and Everose Day-Date President often grace his wrist. The addition of a model like the Santos de Cartier Skeleton shows a new level of sophistication in his collection. If the Warriors can secure another win this season, it’ll be interesting to see which model he invests in next.

  • Curry is from Charlotte, not Akron. Lebron James is from akron.

    • Hi Cindy,

Curry and James were actually born in the same hospital in Akron according to our research, but Curry then moved to Charlotte and was raised there. Hope this helps.
