Where to Sell a Rolex Watch

So you have decided to sell your Rolex. Inevitably, you want to get the best price selling it you can. There are many options for selling a Rolex watch, but there are pros and cons to each of these solutions. This can be overwhelming, so we have laid out some options for you to help make the best decision for you and your watch.

Auction Houses

When selling a high value item, such as a luxury Rolex watch, trust is extremely important. Because auction houses typically have strong name recognition and carry a lot of prestige, they are seen as trustworthy. This can make them a good place to sell watches worth more than $10,000.

While name recognition and prestige are great advantages, there are other factors to consider.  One of the major disadvantages to selling with an auction house is time. If you are looking to sell your watch quickly, an auction house is not the way to do it. Oftentimes, items must be submitted to an auction house several months before the auction will be held. Also, many auction houses do not provide payment until 45 days after the auction.

In addition to the issue of time, there are also many fees associated with selling with an auction house. Some auction houses will charge fees of up to 35%! There are many other ways to sell a Rolex watch that do not charge such high fees.

Advantages: Name recognition, Prestige
Disadvantages: High fees, long process. (You can learn more about disadvantages of selling to an auction house here.)

Dealers
Selling a Rolex watch through a dealer can be very convenient because you can meet with them face-to-face, which can make it a very quick process. However, dealers often do not have enough knowledge about the watch to know its true value, often resulting in lower prices.

Advantages: Face-to-face, quick process
Disadvantages:
Lower prices

eBay

eBay is one of the most popular ways to sell any item. One of the advantages to this process is that the seller can choose the time frame. There are a couple of options offered through the platform for timeframe and for sale type. First, the seller can choose “No Reserve” which allows the seller to set a price and a buyer can purchase it immediately if they are willing to pay that price. The other option is “Auction” where buyers can place a bid and whoever has the highest bid at the end of the selected timeframe is the new owner of that watch.

While eBay makes it easy for buyers to find what they want, it is not very seller friendly. Because eBay has a reputation for fraud, the seller has to have a way to establish trust with the buyers. The most successful sellers are the ones with a high seller ranking, which comes from selling and delivering products just as promised. However, building up this high sellers ranking can take a significant amount of time, as it is achieved through successfully selling products and receiving great reviews. Lastly, there are fees associated with selling it yourself on eBay.

Advantages: Easy for buyers
Disadvantages: Not seller friendly, fees

Crown & Caliber

Now obviously, we are a little biased when it comes to this solution. But we think that Crown & Caliber is the best and most convenient way to sell a Rolex watch. We offer a couple of options right at your fingertips. Because Crown & Caliber is an e-commerce business, we do not have a store-front and can offer higher prices. We also buy watches outright, so you don’t have to wait for an auction to end or for an independent buyer.

Some people are little hesitant about sending their watch through the mail to people they have never met. However, we provide customers with pre-paid and fully-insured labels. This means that your watch is protected while en route to our facilities, while its here, and if you decide against the offer, when your watch is on the way back to you.

We also offer two options for payment. You can choose the cash offer which means that you will get a check for the amount of our final offer. You can also choose the trade-in offer. This offer is typically a little higher than the cash, and allows you to use credit at Crown & Caliber towards another watch.

Advantages:  Convenient, Quick, Payment Options, Higher Offers
Disadvantages: No Face-to-Face

There are pros and cons to every watch selling solution. It is up to you to decide which option is best for you and your watch.

No matter what option you choose, determining the value of your watch can help you decide if you plan to sell it. You can request a commitment-free quote from Crown & Caliber’s experts to get an estimate on your watch value.

Crown & Caliber

Crown & Caliber is the smartest way to buy or sell a luxury watch. As an exclusively online marketplace for pre-owned timepieces, Crown & Caliber exists to ensure that when it comes down to the final transaction, buyers and sellers can both win. For sellers, we do all the legwork of valuating, marketing, and selling—for buyers, we put trust back into the act of purchasing sight-unseen with our servicing and authentication process. By emphasizing transparency and placing value on quality, Crown & Caliber has become the preferred marketplace for watch collectors and casual enthusiasts alike.
