U.S. Open Wrap-Up

Recapping the U.S. Open’s Top Player Performances

The 2019 U.S. Open featured unexpected upsets, unsurprising victories, and, of course, spectacular watches on and off the court. World No. 1 Serbian tennis pro and Seiko ambassador Novak Djokovic went out early in the Round of 16. Here, he lost to Audemars Piguet ambassador Stan Wawrinka. Roger Federer, Rolex ambassador and tennis’s World No. 3 player, only advanced to the quarterfinals. In women’s singles, three of the sport’s up and coming athletes just made it to the Round of 16: Rado ambassador Ashleigh Barty, Citizen ambassador Naomi Osaka, and Hublot ambassador Karolina Pliskova. Still, two of tennis’s greatest legends went all the way to the finals. Each wore a watch during play as a lucky charm.

Grigor Dimitrov is a Bulgarian professional tennis player ranked World No. 25. The young athlete still has yet to land his first Grand Slam victory. He took audiences by surprise when he advanced to the semifinals at the U.S. Open. This marked a first in his career. Here, he faced Daniil Medvedev, who ultimately defeated him. Despite the ups and downs in his career, Rolex has seen promise in the player from early on. The brand brought him on as an ambassador back in 2014. Since then, Dimitrov has added a number of different models to his collection. Some of his favorites include the Explorer II, Sky Dweller, Yacht Master, and Deepsea.

Elina Svitolina is a Ukrainian tennis pro ranked World No. 3. In 2019, she had her hopes set on notching her first Grand Slam victory. Svitolina came incredibly close at three of the four tournaments. While she made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, she unfortunately lost to powerhouse player Serena Williams. This left her just short of advancing to the finals at the U.S. Open. Still, one watch brand has faith in the promising player. Svitolina has been a Ulysse Nardin ambassador since 2017. One of her favorite models is the Classico Jade.

Daniil Medvedev is a Russian professional tennis player. He notched his career high ranking as the World No. 4 since advancing to the finals at the U.S. Open. This marks the player’s first time reaching the final round of a Grand Slam tournament in his career. Here, he faced none other than the “King of Clay” himself, Rafael Nadal. Though Nadal ultimately claimed victory, Medvedev put up an admirable fight. In fact, the match lasted nearly five hours. Luckily for Bovet, they saw the potential in the player leading up to the 2019 season and signed him on as an ambassador. His current model of choice is the Ottansei Tourbillon. However, we imagine he’ll be adding more models to his collection in the near future.

Rafael Nadal needs no introduction. The Spanish athlete is the No. 2 ranked tennis player in the world. He’s won a whopping nineteen Grand Slam singles titles following his most recent victory at the U.S. Open. This is the second most for a male player in the history of the sport. The victory also marks his fourth win at the U.S. Open. Nadal is almost as notorious for his watches as he is his tennis game. The player has partnered with Richard Mille since 2010. Each year, the duo never fails to shock watch and tennis lovers alike with their creations. For the past two seasons, Nadal has been loyal to his RM 27-03. He was wearing the watch throughout his grueling match with Medvedev and when he claimed his title.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams is another player who’s become a household name, currently holding the No. 9 ranking in the world. The U.S. Open is a particularly special tournament for the American tennis pro. Here, she shares the Open Era record for the most titles won with tennis great Chris Evert. In fact, 2019 marked her tenth appearance in the U.S. Open finals, where she hoped to land her twenty-fourth Grand Slam title. Despite her speedy victories in the quarter and semifinals, Williams fell short in the final round. She ultimately lost to the young Canadian tennis pro, Bianca Andreescu. Like Nadal, Williams is one of few players who wears a watch on the court. Since 2014, that watch has been an Audemars Piguet. Williams is a proud ambassador of the illustrious brand with one of her favorite models being the Royal Oak Offshore – the same watch she wore at the U.S. Open.
