The relationship between luxury watches and golf grows stronger and more evident with every championship. This weekend, golf fans witnessed a weekend of incredible play at the PGA Championship at Valhalla golf course in Louisville, Kentucky. Twenty-five year old, Rory McIlroy, won the 96th PGA Championship and hoisted the coveted Wanamaker Trophy at yesterday evening’s trophy presentation. However, his victory didn’t come without a little bit of drama. After almost a 3 hour rain delay, the golfers tee time was starting significantly later than originally planned, forcing the last two groups of golfers to finish 18th hole in the dark. Fan favorite Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, and Rory McIlroy were all on top of the leaderboard and were a part of the last two groups on the green. McIlroy had a two shot lead over both Fowler and Mickelson going into the 18th, but McIlroy’s second shot on the par 5 hole landed in the bunker, giving the other two golfers a little bit of hope. Mickelson missed an eagle shot by inches and settled for a birdie, putting him one shot behind McIlroy. Fowler barely missed his par shot and fell another shot behind with his bogey. McIlroy was able to hit a great shot out from the bunker and sunk his fifth shot, which was par on this hole, maintaining his one shot lead over Mickelson and giving him the victory, minutes before the sun was completely gone. McIlroy gave his dad a huge hug and headed to the clubhouse to sign his scorecard. In addition to the trophy, Ted Bishop, President of The PGA of America, presented McIlroy with an OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m timepiece. The PGA Championship is sponsored by OMEGA and OMEGA clocks were placed throughout the green to help the attendees keep the time. As an OMEGA ambassador, McIlroy will be able to add this OMEGA to his collection of watches. Before hoisting the coveted trophy at the trophy ceremony, McIlroy slipped on an OMEGA watch onto his left wrist, giving the watch plenty of camera time. This is McIlroy’s third win and second major win in a row, ending an incredible summer for the young golfer.

The top four finishers in this year’s PGA Championship were Rory McIlroy (-16), Phil Mickelson (-15), and Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson (-14). Not only were the top four finishers some of the most popular golfers in the sport, but they are all sponsored by a luxury watch brand. McIlroy is an ambassador for OMEGA, while Mickelson, Fowler, and Stenson are all sponsored by Rolex.
Golfers and golf fans will continue to see OMEGA clocks positioned throughout events sponsored by PGA of America as OMEGA and the PGA of America extended its partnership throughout 2022. OMEGA also sponsors golf tournaments in both Europe and Asia.
