The OMEGA 1957 Trilogy Edition

In 1948, OMEGA celebrated their 100^th birthday. By then, the storied brand already had a reputation for accuracy and precision. They were timing major sporting events, had used groundbreaking technology to build their movements, and in a few years would see one of their watches withstand the elements flawlessly after it was strapped to the exterior of a plane for a long flight. However, even after all of that, OMEGA had yet to produce their most iconic models. But, in 1957, three legends were born, and 60 years later, the limited edition OMEGA 1957 Trilogy debuted as a celebration of those three classics.

The OMEGA 1957 Trilogy

The OMEGA Trilogy collection is a limited-edition box set of 557 units featuring 60^th anniversary releases of the OMEGA Speedmaster, Seamaster, and Railmaster watches.

The Speedmaster

The Speedmaster in the set is a “Broad Arrow” tribute to the original version. The “Broad Arrow” is special for a couple of reasons. First, are the hands. The arrow-style hands are not available on every Speedmaster variety. Secondly, it was the first Speedmaster created and was also the first chronograph with a tachymeter on the bezel. Prior to that, tachymeters were always located on the dial. This 2017 version is the most perfect match to the original Speedmaster and showcases the spirit of this iconic watch.

As far as specs on this watch go, the Speedmaster Trilogy edition has a 38.6mm case with a width of 19mm between the lugs. It has a hesalite crystal with a small OMEGA etched in the center. The dial is a tropical black and contains vintage indices filled with Super-LumiNova for brightness in the dark. The bracelet is an updated steel but features a retro OMEGA logo on the clasp. It’s powered by the calibre 1861, an OMEGA movement, which is a manual wind with a 48-hour power reserve.

The Seamaster

The OMEGA 1957 Trilogy edition Seamaster takes inspiration from the Seamaster 300 CK2913. In 1957, the CK2913 featured a water resistance of 300m which, at the time, was an exceptional feat. Sixty years later, 300m of water resistance is still pretty impressive. To commemorate this innovation in 1957, the CK2913 had a seahorse on the caseback and a Naïad on the crown. The Trilogy re-release also features 300m of water resistance and these two special symbols.

The features of this Trilogy Seamaster 300 include a bi-directional rotating bezel, a screw-in crown, and a chronometer. The watch is also anti-magnetic. It has a scratch-resistant sapphire  crystal with an interior anti-reflective coating. The dial is a tropical black with a matching black bezel. The indices are vintage and deepened slightly for a Super-LumiNova filling for underwater visibility. The stainless steel case is 39mm with 19mm of space between the lugs. The case also sits on a stainless steel bracelet that has had a strength update and features both brushed and polished finishes. Like the Speedmaster, it also has a retro-style OMEGA logo on the clasp. The Master Chronometer 8806 powers the Seamaster and is a self-winding movement with a 55-hour power reserve.

The Railmaster

The last watch in the OMEGA 1957 Trilogy collection may not be the most iconic of the three models but is still a legend in its own right. OMEGA created the Railmaster to be an anti-magnetic watch for people working close to electrical fields. The beauty of the Railmaster is in its simplicity and the vintage styling. It is a modest watch with a workhorse of an engine. The Railmaster can withstand magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss, which is a unit of magnetic induction. Though OMEGA has since created watches that can withstand higher gauss, the Railmaster was and is a leader in innovation.

Like its Trilogy mates, the Railmaster features a tropical black dial and vintage indices that are recessed and filled with Super-LumiNova for visibility. It has a 38mm stainless steel case with a 19mm distance between the lugs. The Railmaster comes outfitted with a strengthened stainless steel bracelet featuring both polished and brushed finishes. The crystal has an interior anti-reflective coating and is a scratch-resistant sapphire. It too has the small OMEGA logo in the middle of the dial. The Railmaster is water-resistant to 60m, has a chronometer, and is, as mentioned, anti-magnetic. The Master Chronometer 8806 powers the Railmaster and provides its anti-magnetism. Also, the movement is self-winding, and has a power reserve of 55 hours.

The Presentation

As if the three watches in the Trilogy box set were not enough, OMEGA outdid themselves on the packaging for their icons. The trio comes in a red leather case with gold accents and a tan corduroy interior. This case then sits inside of an engraved Swiss-oak box that features the OMEGA Hippocampus on the top and symmetric, clean box joints as an alternative to dovetail joints. There is also a leather watch roll with a wooden spring bar tool, branded pockets, and extra straps. The six straps include three leather bands and three NATO strap options. To top it off, the watches come engraved with identical Limited Edition numbers. With this set, it’s tough to decide whether the OMEGA 1957 trilogy looks better on the wrist or in its incredible presentation.
