The OMEGA brand has been a big supporter of professional athletics for nearly a century. Many know them as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, where they developed the first automated timers in 1948. However, they also work closely with a number of other pro-athletes and sports, such as sailing, swimming, and golf.
OMEGA serves as the Official Timekeeper for a number of golf’s greatest events around the globe. They proudly partner with the Ryder Cup, the Dubai Desert Classic, the European Masters, and the PGA Championship. The brand has worked with the PGA Championship since 2011. Their relationship with one of golf’s four major tournaments has solidified their place in the sport and among top players. In 2018, they helped the tournament celebrate their 100th anniversary. Now, at this year’s upcoming event, they’re working together again for an eighth season.
OMEGA has often used the platform of the PGA Championship to unveil a new model in their Golf collection. They started this highly anticipated tradition at their first PGA Championship in 2011. Here, they debuted the first-ever Seamaster Aqua Terra Golf. The initial model in the collection was merely an aesthetically updated variation of the brand’s standard 41mm Aqua Terra. To give it a golf appeal, they added “golf green” accents. The hue appears on the minute track, tips of the hands, and the “Seamaster” logo. However, over the years, the collection has evolved exponentially.
In 2017, OMEGA made some major updates to the Golf line. They debuted them at none other than the PGA Championship. The brand designed the new models in partnership with two of its golf ambassadors, Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy. One of the most notable changes was the addition of an all-new NATO strap in two colorways.
There’s a green and black striped variation for the Sergio Garcia edition. The hue is a nod to the iconic Masters green jacket won by the player. There’s also an orange and black striped iteration for the Rory McIlroy edition. In addition, OMEGA made a few other minor stylistic updates. For instance, they relocated the date window from the three-o’clock position to the six-o’clock position. Inside, the model also got an upgrade with an all-new movement: the co-axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8900. It not only boasts COSC certification but also METAS certification. You can see it in all its glory through the sapphire caseback.
We haven’t heard any whisperings alluding to a new addition to the Aqua Terra Golf collection at the 2019 event. However, for OMGA fans, there’s a special exhibit on display at the tournament. Here, visitors can explore a retrospective of Speedmaster watches showcasing the history of their relationship with NASA. Fans of the watchmaker and sport can also check out the watches their ambassadors are wearing during the PGA Championship. In addition, to McIlroy and Garcia, Tommy Fleetwood is another golfer on OMEGA’s roster. If you’re watching the event from home, be sure to keep an eye on the players’ wrists. See if you can spot the models they’re wearing!
