Honoring NASA Through the Speedmaster Patch Campaign

A mission patch is a highly symbolic memento given to NASA teams after they embark on an exploration. In 1997, the legendary OMEGA Speedmaster celebrated its 40^th anniversary. So that year, the brand created a special edition set of models called the Mission Series. They featured interpretations of NASA “mission patches” on the dial, commemorating significant space missions. Hence, the  Speedmaster Patch.

A decade later, for the 50^th anniversary in 2007, Omega decided to up the ante with the “Patch Campaign.” This time, they designed six of their own “mission patches.” Each celebrates a unique aspect of the iconic Speedmaster and the important role it has played throughout history. From Ralph Plaisted’s North Pole conquest in 1968 to the historic lunar landing in 1969, the Speedmaster has been there. And so, it will continue to be. One of the six patches honors NASA’s planned mission to Mars in 2030. Of course, they plan for the Speedmaster to accompany the astronauts on the International Space Station.

The Exclusive Omega Speedmaster Patch Edition

With the “Patch Campaign” came the Speedmaster Moonwatch “Patch” 50^th Anniversary Limited Edition watch. OMEGA produced the model in a limited run of 5,957 pieces. This might seem like a relatively large number for a special edition piece. However, remember that the brand manufactures around 600,000 to 700,000 watches each year.

The model boasts a modern, oversized 42mm case. It features a special Seahorse “1957” logo reading “50^th Anniversary” at the twelve-o’clock position. Below there are three sub dials at the three, six, and nine-o’clock positions. Each is for 30 minutes, twelve hours, and 60 seconds respectively. Additionally, the model comes equipped with a tachymeter bezel. This feature allows the wearer to measure average speed over a certain distance. Inside, it houses Omega’s Caliber 1861 hand-wound mechanical movement. This Speedy also comes equipped with a 48-hour power reserve and 50 meters of water resistance. The model is complete with a stainless steel bracelet and deployant clasp.

A Piece of History

The fact that the model’s design has remained largely unchanged for over 50 years is a testament to its power.
