Profiles In Time: Clint Eastwood’s Watches

Clint Eastwood is arguably one of the most prominent actors and filmmakers of all time. He truly embodies the all-American ideal: He grew up along the West Coast, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and has portrayed quite a few on-screen American icons.

After he was discharged from the army in 1953, Eastwood returned to his home state of California and scored his first screen test with Universal. Soon after, he signed a contract with the studio and appeared in his first minor roles in films like Francis in the Navy and Revenge of the Creature. By 1958, Eastwood landed his first major role in the TV show Rawhide.

Throughout the 1960’s, Eastwood starred in Western films A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. These films garnered global recognition, and Eastwood quickly rose to international stardom.

Around this time, he received his famous Rolex “Root Beer” GMT Master from longtime Rolex executive T. Walker Lloyd. The “Root Beer” GMT, sometimes called the “Clint Eastwood,” is named for its two-tone brown and gold bezel.

Eastwood’s personal watch appeared in a number of films throughout his career. First, in the 1982 thriller, Firefox: Eastwood starred as a pilot, making the GMT-Master a perfect fit for the character. Just two years later, he sported his Rolex in the film Tightrope, in which Eastwood played a detective put on the case of a serial killer. Eastwood’s Secret Service agent character is also spotted with his “Root Beer” Rolex in the 1993 thriller In the Line of Fire.

In addition to his illustrious “Root Beer” GMT, Eastwood has also been seen wearing a two-tone Rolex Datejust in more recent years. This is evidence that he’s a true Rolex man at heart. As both an acclaimed actor and a true all-American man, Eastwood and Rolex make the perfect pair.
