A Look Back at Men’s Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week’s women’s collections tend to get more attention than the men’s fashion week each season. This week, the industry elite from around the globe flock to New York City. Here, they’ll see the debut of the ladies’ wear for spring/summer 2019. And, it got us thinking about the men’s collections that displayed just a couple months ago in July.

You may not consider yourself to be a guy who’s particularly into fashion. However, you might be surprised at how global fashion trends influence the watch industry. Today, we’re looking at some popular styles from the men’s SS19 collections and how they translate to timepieces.

Men’s Fashion Week Looks:

The Warm Weather Uniform

Whether you have a business dinner, date night, or evening out with the boys, suiting will reign supreme for SS19. Stock up on suits in cool, breathable fabrics like linen for the warmer months. And, be sure to cover all your bases when it comes to colors. Your suit will be your uniform next spring. Of course, every good suit needs a good dress watch. However, it doesn’t need to be too stuffy for the more relaxed days of spring and summer. Turn to your laid-back, understated IWC Portofino or your no-frills Cartier Tank to compliment your spring and summer suiting. Or, if you could use a new dress watch, consider adding one to your collection.

80’s Inspiration

For several seasons, designers have been playing with inspiration from decades past. Next spring and summer, you can expect to see some tailoring reminiscent of the 1980’s. Think double-breasted jackets, sport coats, and blazers paired with wide-legged pants. It’s the perfect excuse to revive one of your retro watches. Grab one of your favorite models from the era (or steal one from dad’s collection). If you need help remembering some favorites from the decade, the Rolex GMT Master II launched in 1983. The first Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with an automatic movement debuted in 1988. And, the last non-ceramic Rolex Submariner closed out the decade in 1989.

Stylish Sportswear

Athleisure has been king for a number of seasons, and next year will be no different. Sportswear came heavily represented in the men’s SS19 collections. However, designers take the gym wear look up a notch and make it a bit more stylish. They created looks suitable for taking the kids on a playdate or hitting the bar after a football scrimmage. A watch is the perfect way to keep your athleisure elevated, but be sure to keep with the sporty theme. Look to models like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, TAG Heuer Carrera, or Panerai Radiomir. Any of these options would instantly add a touch of style to your sportswear.

Neon Hues

In sticking with both the 80’s and sportswear themes, neon hues will be prevalent in next year’s SS19 collections. The color yellow is a particularly popular shade. If a full neon jacket or shirt feels too intimidating, don’t worry. Neons aren’t for everyone. You can still rock the trend with pops of color in your accessories, like your watch. Brands like Breitling or Hublot are no stranger to using bold colors in their designs. However, you don’t have to commit to a colored dial or bezel to be on-trend. Add a colorful strap to an existing model in your collection. It’s an easy way to make an old favorite feel like new.

Nautical Vibes

Nothing says warm weather like nautical vibes. Stripes prevailed in a number of men’s SS19 collections. The resulting ensembles looked ready for a day of yachting or sailing and a night of cruising the boardwalk. The dive watch is arguably the quintessential summer timepiece. Whether you’re an amateur diver or simply enjoy a day on the water, it’s a must-have in your collection. There are so many notable producers of superior dive watches. However, none quite rival OMEGA’s breadth of offerings. From the brand’s signature model, the Seamaster, to performance-driven models like the Planet Ocean, you can’t go wrong.
