As we head closer and closer toward the end of 2017, award season is upon us. The big ceremonies are set to kick off with the 69th Emmys on Sunday, September 17th. The annual event celebrates the best of the best in television, from hit cable shows to the latest sensations on streaming platforms like Netflix. The pre-show red carpet is typically the place where the fashion community buzzes about what the hottest stars are wearing. But, as we’re gearing up for the 69th annual Emmy Awards, we’re curious what these leading ladies and gentlemen are sporting on their wrists on and off screen.
Viola Davis is no stranger to the Emmy ballot. She has been nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder for the past three years. In fact, she won the category in 2015. On the show, her powerhouse character can be seen wearing a yellow gold Cartier Tank Americaine.
Since it debuted in 2013, House of Cards has caught the attention of viewers and critics alike. The show’s leading lady, Claire Underwood, has garnered actress Robin Wright five Emmy nominations for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In the first two seasons, Underwood sported a classic Cartier Tank. However, in Season 3, the costume designer swapped it out for a Cartier Tank Louis with a brown leather strap – the same style worn by Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
Liev Schreiber received his first Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Ray Donovan in 2015, and this year, he’s on the ballot again for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. His ruthless yet always polished and poised character is most well-known for wearing an Omega Seamaster. However, in one particular episode he’s seen bribing a probation officer with his Rolex Daytona.
Acclaimed actor Kevin Spacey has received five Emmy nominations for his portrayal of Francis Underwood on House of Cards. To ensure his character has a sharp watch collection that reflects his status and style, Spacey brought a bit of his affinity for the IWC brand onto the set. Over the course of the five seasons, the menacing and conniving politician can be seen wearing a number of models from the brand, including a Portuguese Chronograph, Portuguese 7-Day, Spitfire Chrono, Portofino Hand-Wound 8 Days, and Da Vinci Chronograph.
This year, Anthony Anderson received his third Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Comedy series for his portrayal of Andre “Dre” Johnson in Black-ish. Over the course of the show’s four seasons, his character remains loyal to one watch brand: Audemars Piguet. He can be spotted wearing three different variations of the Royal Oak models – a Black Oak Chronograph, a Black Oak Automatic, and an Offshore Chronograph.
Nicole Kidman is most well-known for her work in film, but this year she stunned audiences and critics alike with her gripping portrayal of Celeste Wright in the miniseries Big Little Lies. The performance earned Kidman her second ever Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. Off screen, she’s been an ambassador to one watch brand for over ten years: Omega. She has a number of models in her collection but has most recently been sporting an incredibly rare vintage Omega circa 1953 that is on lend to her from the Omega museum in Biel, Switzerland.
Susan Sarandon is an Emmy Award veteran. The acclaimed actress has been nominated seven times over the course of her impressive career but is yet to receive a win. This year, she’s up for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Bette Davis in Feud: Bette and Joan. When it comes to watches, Sarandon has two preferences: it must be an oversized men’s timepiece and the brand must support a good cause. Thus, her wristwatch of choice is an IWC Portofino Hand-Wound 8 Day.
When he’s not in character as Ray Donovan, Liev Schreiber is a self-proclaimed watch enthusiast and collector. It all started with his grandfather’s Timex, featuring a navy blue alligator band. Since then, his taste and sense of style have advanced. He’s currently loving the latest timepieces from Tiffany’s. The most recent addition to his collection is a Tiffany Watch Workshop CT60.
Reese Witherspoon has received numerous nominations and awards for her work in film. This year she’s received her first ever Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Madeline Martha Mackenzie in the miniseries Big Little Lies. The actress is a one-watch woman – she’s a Rolex lady but opts for a man’s watch. Her go-to timepiece is none other than a Rolex President.
Ewan McGregor is another Hollywood icon making the shift from film to television. He’s received his first Emmy nomination in a decade for his portrayal of Emmit Stussy in the miniseries Fargo. Although his nomination for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie comes as no surprise, you might be surprised to learn that watchmaking runs in his blood. His grandfather was a watchmaker, so he’s always had a strong appreciation for the craft. For several years, he’s been an ambassador for IWC and is particularly fond of their Pilot’s collection.
