What Watch Does Rory McIlroy Wear?

Rory McIlroy On and Off the Green

Rory McIlroy is an Irish professional golfer who plays on both the European and PGA Tours. McIlroy once held the world No. 1 spot for 95 weeks. However, in 2019 he comes in at No. 2 behind Brooks Koepka. In just over a decade of professional play, he’s managed to set a number of records. During his first major win at the U.S. Open, he set the tournament records score of -16. The following year, he won the PGA Championship with a record margin of victory, eight strokes. He went on to win the PGA Championship again along with the Open Championship. This made him one of four players to win three majors by the age of twenty-five along with Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Jordan Spieth. In addition to his passion for golf, McIlroy shares in our passion for timepieces. Since his early days of play, he’s always sported a watch on his wrist. However, over the years, his tastes and brand of choice has varied.

Early Years

McIlroy’s father introduced him to the sport of golf at a young age. The young player quickly became infatuated with the game. Throughout his youth, McIlroy’s father continued to be devoted to his son’s development as a golfer. His belief and investment in his son paid off. By the age of fifteen, McIlroy was offered a golf scholarship. However, he turned it down to continue playing amateur golf in Europe. Three years later, he played his first major at the 2007 Open Championships and became the highest finishing amateur. Later that year, he officially turned pro.

Professional Career

It took McIlroy a few years to get his footing on the professional circuit. Soon he caught his stride, winning the 2011 U.S. Open and then the PGA Championship a year later. 2013 proved to be an off-season for the burgeoning player. However, he came back in 2014 with two major wins at the PGA Championship and Open Championship. The following year, McIlroy failed to notch another win but came in fourth at the Masters. In the past several years, McIlroy’s momentum has continued to slow. In 2019, he didn’t land another major win. Still, he came in first at the Tour Championship toward the end of the season.

So, what watch does Rory McIlroy Wear?

Early in his career, McIlroy was among Audemars Piguet’s ranks of ambassadors. You could find him sporting models like the Royal Oak Offshore back in 2012 at his PGA Championship win. The player tended to favor unique variations, like the Offshore Chronograph Bumblebee in forged carbon.

A year later, McIlroy made a surprising switch to OMEGA. Shortly after, he became the face of the brand’s Aqua Terra collection. However, he didn’t limit himself to just one model. During his 2014 PGA Championship win, he showed off an Aqua Terra GMT while receiving a Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m for his victory. By 2015, the star player had an official timepiece: the Seamaster Aqua Terra Golf 150m Master Co-Axial. The 41.5mm model features a stainless steel construction and black dial with “fairway” green accents on the central seconds hand and minute track. Under the hood is the brand’s in-house co-axial caliber 8500 with METAS certifications and magnetic resistance up to 15,000 gauss. Two years later, OMEGA further customized the model for the player. The new variation features a silver “teak” pattern dial with the green accents replaced by a bright orange. In addition, the model gets a sporty black and orange striped NATO strap and the latest caliber 8900 movement.
